Quilting Classes - Fall 2008

  Appliqué - Alex Anderson's Way - Part 1  (1 hand) Top
Susan Tennison
Appliqué offers a unique way to make a design on your  fabric.  By layering shapes of fabric on top of background fabrics, you can create  numerous designs and patterns very different from pieced designs.  If you want to get started on appliqué, this class will be a good, general introduction.  We will learn the preparation steps, tackle the appliqué stitch itself, and create the center of the project called "Color Sampler" in Alex Anderson's book, Hand Appliqué.  This class, Part 1, will get you started on appliqué, with Part 2 helping with some of the nuances of appliqué.  With this background, you will soon be stitching away!

2 sessions: Class fee $40 (Book required)

Select a drawing or poem or trace around tiny hands to use as the focal block for a charming memory wall quilt, then select juvenile prints that depict their favorite things. We'll cover tracing, bonding and other methods of transferring images to cloth. To transfer drawings or other non-traceable images, bring the prepared image on cloth (using iron-transfer, etc.) We will create the top and discuss quilting designs.

You'll "fall" for the beauty of the design of this quilt. But... we will simplify the instructions and use quicker techniques to create this showstopper. You'll choose the complexity of the center section with three options for construction. Instead of complicated piecing for the leaves, we'll use machine appliqué to apply them to the background. You'll prepare the background before class, and then we'll take care of the rest in class!

This block is a variation of the popular pattern, Castle Wall. It has the same octagon center, surrounded by a ring of triangles and eight diamond-shaped star points. But, unlike Castle Wall which is made with diamonds, triangles, an octagon and one odd-shape, this block is a template-free, rotary-cut design sewn entirely with straight seams - no set-ins! The center octagon is a great spot to put a fussy-cut design, surrounded by bright diamond stars.
